Giancarlo Lo Manto is an inspector with the Naples, Italy police department, working homicide and narcotics. When his niece goes missing in New York City, Lo Manto arranges for a temporary assignment with the NYPD to search for the girl. In New York, Lo Manto is partnered with Jennifer Fabini, a thirty-two-year-old, ten-year veteran of the police force. As they work on the case, they encounter Felipe, a homeless street kid who steals anything and everything within sight. (Lo Manto hires Felipe at ten dollars a day, plus meals, to keep his eyes and ears open.) It is this trio that creates the core group investigating the disappearance of Lo Manto's niece. As the search progresses, they uncover crimes and relationships connected to Lo Manto's past - a past of which even he is unaware. That search brings them up against Pete Rossi, a college-educated Mafia don and the face of the modern Camorra (Mafia) in America. It is the confrontation with Rossi that reveals Lo Manto's secret history - and brings a decades-long blood feud to a brutal end.
